Zorro in the Court of Spain (original Italian title: Zorro alla corte di Spagna) is a 1962 Swashbuckling Adventure directed by Luigi Capuano. It stars George Ardisson as Zorro / Riccardo di Villa Real, Alberto Lupo, and Nadia Marlowa.
The story is different from normal American Zorro. This one happens in Spain, not Mexico.
Returning from Mexico to his native Spain, the noble Marquis Riccardo di Villa Real finds his country in danger. The evil brother of the dead Duke of Lusitania, Don Ramon de Castro, has taken the throne. He steals power from the rightful heirs — the Grand Duchess Giovanna and her little daughter Isabella. He forces the Duchess to give up her royal rights.
But there is a hero. A mysterious man in black with a mask and a sword — Zorro — appears to bring justice. Who is this masked avenger? It’s Riccardo himself.
This is not a Spaghetti Western with guns. It’s a sword-fighting adventure, colorful and fun. George Ardisson is very good as Zorro — charming, fast with the sword, and elegant. If you like old Zorro movies with castles, duels, and royal conspiracy, you will like this.
I watched the Italian dub and English dub. The Italian dub (Zorro alla corte di Spagna) is again better — the voices in the court scenes sound more royal and dramatic. In English, some sword fight sounds are too loud and the dialogue is flat.
My rating is 7/10. It’s not as famous as Alain Delon or Antonio Banderas Zorro, but it’s a rare, fun Italian Zorro from the 60s. Perfect for fans of George Ardisson and classic adventure.
